Spring has sprung! I love this season for so many reasons. There are fresh, colorful flowers around every corner, the sun is brighter and the semester is finally coming to an end. But as much as I love sunflowers and a deep tan, my favorite part of this season is the opportunity to start over new.
Spring cleaning is something I actually look forward to, and I know that everyone appreciates the feeling that comes with having more closet space, fresh sheets and a happy mindset. Deep cleaning everything about your life can seem like a daunting task, but with a solid plan, it will take no more than a couple days to have everything feeling like brand new.
Tip 1 – Make a list.
I like to make a list of things that I need to deep clean (usually the chores I don’t normally want to do). I use a sheet of notebook paper to write down everything that needs to be done, in order from big to small.
Tip 2 – Do the chores you hate the most first.
Getting the large tasks over with first always helps me feel more accomplished and motivated to check off the rest of the list. Some of these tasks might be scrubbing my bathtub and mopping, for example.
After I’ve gotten my hands dirty, I move on to the more “fun” tasks, such as clearing out clutter. I am a neat freak and somewhat of a minimalist, so I make a point of getting rid of stuff every couple of months.

Tip 3 – Don’t forget to go through your closet!
There is no better feeling than having an empty shelf in your closet. (No more wondering if those cute shoes at Target will fit in your closet!)
I start by going through all of my clothes and figuring out what I do and don’t wear. I know I’m not the only one that’s guilty of keeping clothes because “I’ll wear it someday.”
If I haven’t worn it in the past couple of months, it’s going in the Goodwill pile. Clearing out your closet is also a great opportunity to donate to a homeless shelter or thrift store. Doing good makes you feel good.
Tip 4 – Clean out storage boxes every once in a while.
Once my closet has had a makeover, I move on to the rest of my room. I go through all my storage boxes and determine what I don’t need to keep anymore. You’re guaranteed to find a couple of old notebooks or One Direction posters you just don’t have space for.
I’m a very sentimental person, and I think it’s important to keep things that hold a lot of memories — don’t feel like you have to throw out your childhood doll. But that movie ticket stub from 5 years ago with your middle school crush? Yeah, that can and should be trashed.
Tip 5 – Treat yo self.
The best part about getting rid of the old is making room for the new. I always treat myself to a new outfit or new sheets after tackling a big project like cleaning my entire room. It gives me motivation and reason to get rid of things for which I no longer have a purpose.
Tip 6 – Don’t just clean your room, clean your mental space.
Along with cleaning the physical space of your room, make sure to clear out the clutter of old files on your laptop, delete old apps and find a space for all those useless cords that end up laying around.
Update your planner with end-of-the-semester projects and parties and throw out last semester’s busy work. Once every physical aspect is clean, take time to mentally spring clean.
Take a breather and evaluate the people and things in your life. If it no longer serves you, get rid of it. It can be hard to let go, but you will feel so much better and have the focus to finish out the school year with less stress and stuff!
Use this season as an opportunity to become the best version of you.
