6 Tips to Taking the Leap and Starting Your Own Blog

The Chic Daily

By Maya Foxall

In this day and age, everybody has their own voice and an online platform to share that voice. What sets some people apart is the platform they use.

Blogs have become quite popular over the last few years, offering another platform for individualized voices to be heard.

Oddly enough I get to call myself a blogger with only about 3 months of experience, which is the beauty of it.

There are no rules, regulations or restrictions in creating a platform that is uniquely yours. What completes a site that is completely yours is a blog post that is truly you.

This might sound odd, but bear with me.

Tip #1 – Make a schedule.

Give yourself a deadline and try your best to stick with that deadline. Whether that is to have an idea for your next post by Friday or scheduling your posts once or twice a week, it is a nice way to stay on track.

The best part of being your own boss is that you are in charge of your own schedule. The site is created by you and is fully controlled by you.

My deadlines are Tuesdays and Saturdays which allows me just enough time to get blog posts ideas circulating in my mind at all times. To be honest, the life of a college student and posting on my blog sometimes conflict with one another, but you will know learn limits and can use some trial and error to decide what’s best for you.

Tip #2 – Be true to yourself.

Find out what it is that is ticking you off, making you happy or popping up in your mind at that moment. Sometimes, I find that I will have an idea in mind for a specific day and then I get an idea that won’t go away.

Don’t be afraid to say something that you think will make other people uncomfortable. As long as you are confident in what you are writing, then that is all that matters.

I find inspiration in things that I know people can relate to. Whether it be independence or relationships, I want to make sure that people have an outlet to gain perspective on a situation they might be going through.

Tip #3 – Get comfortable.

Find your happy place or wherever it is that makes you feel most productive.

Do not try to write when you are talking to your friends or in the middle of class. Believe me–I have been there plenty of times. The worst thing you can do to yourself is write something that is forced and lacks passion.

I have learned that writing a blog is about balancing comfort and spontaneity. As a journalism major, I can save the strict rules and guidelines for news articles.

Your blog is you talking about whatever you want, so find a place that makes you comfortable with writing a conversation on paper.

To offer some perspective, I like to sit at my desk with a cup of coffee and my phone put away for a little bit in order to write my best.

Tip #4 – Don’t stress.

Write whatever comes to mind and don’t push yourself to write too much. Let it flow out of you and when you feel done with your point and you’re done.

Don’t worry too much about length because quality is much more important than quantity in this situation. I like to keep on topic and maybe throw in a few lame jokes because that is just the person I am. Once I feel happy with the material and have read through it, I am ready to find some multimedia.

Tip #5 – Photos are your friends.

Visuals are so helpful when it comes to getting your message across. They offer something to look at besides blocks of texts and they can be relevant pictures to the theme of the blog post or even fun gifs that you want to include.

I personally love to add some pictures of friends and family, if it is relevant. This just adds a personal touch that I think everybody appreciates.

Tip #6 – Share your work.

Publish it or save it. This is actually the hardest part. Once you decide the blog post is done, you have complete freedom to do what you want with it.

I suggest publishing it, and the best part is, nobody needs to know. What gains attention for your posts is social media. Thus, if you just want to have fun and let yourself have this outlet without letting the world know, you have every right to do that.

If you do decide to promote it, make sure to get on all of your social media platforms. This includes Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter or any other one you see fit. Adding the link to your blog everywhere will generate more clicks and start your viewership.

Ultimately, I am sure whatever beautiful and creative piece of work you have made is worth reading so please promote it online. You got this.

The best decision I’ve made it taking the leap and letting my friends and family know that I have a blog. From then on, I began gaining traction and posting more about my blog.

It is a scary first step to make, but so worth it. Plus, it takes like six steps and that’s way easier than a recipe on tasty (which I have tried and it is way harder than it looks).
