Alternative-Folk Artist Remi Goode

Imagine this: You’re driving down the highway at sunset. Your best friend in the car. Music blasting. Neither of you has said a word to each other the entire time. You don’t have to, because you both know that in the presence of each other, silence indicates safety.
This feeling of “safe silence” is what inspired up-and-coming alternative-folk artist Remi Goode to release her single by the same name. Goode released Safe Silence on March 20, with the intention of growing her solo music career in addition to being part of the band Brake For Snakes.
Music has been a part of Goode’s life since she joined the Tucson girls’ chorus at age seven. She hopes to continue her passion long past the release of her single. In order to grow her experiences, Goode studies music at ASU and surrounds herself with musicians in her everyday life.
“All my friends are musicians, so that’s all we talk about,” Goode said. “I have other interests and I’ve found other things to do. Only in the past year, I felt I’ve truly grasped what it is to be a songwriter and feel more confident in that skill.”
When it was released, “Safe Silence” attracted hundreds of listeners across music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Pandora. Goode has encouraged listeners to add the song to their playlists, saying that playlists are the biggest way for indie artists to get Spotify’s attention.
Goode wrote “Safe Silence” about a friend who is no longer in her life. She said it’s meant to invoke relaxed vibes and recreate the feelings that she got when she used to hang out with that friend.
“I wrote Safe Silence about saying goodbye to easy company, the friend that you can sit in comfortable quiet with,” Goode wrote in an Instagram post a week before the song was released. “I wanted it to be chill, like driving around and watching the sunset.”
Goode began writing safe silence in August of 2017 when her friend had left for college across the country. The idea of saying goodbye and being apprehensive about change inspired the line “I’m afraid for when things aren’t this way.”
Goode began recording the song with her producer and boyfriend Gabe Lehrer soon after she wrote it. She said being full-time students and making judgment calls about the sound of her music made the process long and difficult.
“There’s a lot of decisions to make, to decide where you want to take it and what you want the final product to be,” Goode said. “Making those decisions is hard for me because there are so many options.”
To push past her challenges, Goode said she made songwriting part of her daily routine. She said she felt easily paralyzed in the songwriting process, so she began to keep track of everything she did to ensure she was working on music.
“I counted everything that I do that works towards music in some way, whether it’s writing down two lines that I come up with or coming up with a new chord progression or going to a band rehearsal,” Goode said. “I also tried to work towards long-term goals. Then I can feel like I’m working towards something because the process is so slow.”
Goode’s next plan is to release a solo album titled “Don’t Drive Me Home” in April 2022. She is also planning for several more single releases before then, as well as a Safe Silence music video.
While she doesn’t have any specific plans regarding her future as a musician, Goode knows that she wants to continue producing music as long as it makes her and her audience happy.
“I think the main thing that I want is to get to a point where I feel like I have a good balance between having the success that I want,” Goode said. “Whatever that ends up being, and still enjoying doing music for music’s sake because that’s ultimately the most important thing.”
