Are Skinny Jeans Back? The Controversial Pants May Be Making a Return

Low-rise pants, baby tees and even capris have made a return to the fashion scene in recent years as the ‘Y2K’ style continues to dominate the latest in fashion. However, certain styles from this era have been continually discarded as outdated and impractical, like long scarves, pants under dresses and skinny jeans … until now.

In Spring 2024, Alice Newbold of British Vogue wrote an article titled “The Skinny Jean is Back!” claiming that the resurgence of tight denim was enhanced by recent runway shows from Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga and Miu Miu on the early 2024 runway.

More recently, social media influencer and model Madeleine White took to her Instagram on Sept. 10 to post a series of photos of her rocking skinny jeans, and captioned the post “! This is not a drill ! Skinny Jean szn is here.”

White paired her black skinny jeans with a Ralph Lauren jumper, a black belt, black knee-high boots and a Dior purse, for a chic and elevated style.

As fall approaches, the buzz around skinny jeans is continuing to build. However, due to the millennial chokehold on the taboo pants in the past decade, the only way that they can make a successful comeback is if they are styled in a way that is not dated, but instead revolutionary.

The best way to do this is to draw inspiration from designers. Miu Miu’s line discarded the traditional high-rise model of skinny jeans in favor of a low-rise dark denim design paired with a chunky belt buckle and a sensible loafer. Balenciaga styled skinny jeans with skin-tight thigh-high boots and a bulky scarf.

After the past five years of statement pants like barrel, flared and overly baggy jeans, leaning into a simpler silhouette of pants means relying heavily on accessorizing. This can be done through belts, jackets, shoes, jewelry and even sunglasses (I’m looking at you Balenciaga).

If you’re not ready to pull out your traditional skinny jeans from the back of your closet yet, slim-fitting denim still offers the tighter fit of skinny jeans without being skin-tight and overly stretchy. As Roberta Schroeder, a writer for Elle, said in her article “Reality Check: Are Skinny Jeans Actually Back Again?”

“We’re wiser this time around, and we won’t be committing any crimes of sartorial proportion,” she said. “The key to getting it right is to not take the ‘skinny’ too literally: avoid anything with too much elastane, and go for a slim, not skin-tight look.”

You can call them what you want: slim, skinny or ugly, just don’t call them dated. Skinny jeans are here to stay … or at least for the rest of 2024.
