Downtown Phoenix is home to some of the most fashion forward people in the west. Just sitting outside Starbucks, you can see all the different styles and trends that make up our little campus. However, it seems that more retro trends are appearing now in stores, runways, and even right here downtown.

One commonly referenced decade is the 70’s, and what’s not to love? From Tommy Hilfiger to Tom Ford, designers drew inspiration from the era to create their lines for the season. Bold colors, brown suede and tie-dye everything is just a few of the many iconic styles that the 1970’s have given to society. Though it had its mishaps (bellbottoms and plaid on everything), we have successfully merged the 70’s ambiance into the 21th century. Coachella made bohemian mainstream and now everyone’s wardrobe has a dash of hippie. Stores like TopShop, Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters have created gypsy-like items that add to the hype as well. As for here downtown, there is not a day when you don’t see a student donning their Birkenstocks and big, Stevie Nicks-like hat. I have to admit that I have been known to rush to class wearing said items and yes, I have too much suede and fringe for one girl. Much like others here on campus and around the world, I am a flower child freak for the seventies.

Now to the decade a lot of us grew up with. The 90’s were a mixture of punk and spunk. Flannels, Doc Martens, and skater dresses may have been appearing in stores during the past couple of years, but they first appeared on rockers and groupies in the middle of the nineties. Then you have your typical overalls, crop tops, and short dresses with tights, which are still worn today. Friends and Clueless are perfect examples of 90’s fashion in its prime. Fast-forward to the 2010’s and you see overalls, Doc Martens, and scrunchies (!!!!!!) hitting stores like Forever 21 and Brandy Melville all across the country. A short skater dress paired with converse and a large jean jacket is my personal fave of the 90’s, which is perfect for class or a night out to Tempe. With a whole decade of fashion that varies from girl-next-door to rocker groupie, the outfit creations are limitless!

Though some think that reusing past fashion is unoriginal and old news, I believe that with a modern twist to an old classic, there are many potential designs that are untapped! Who knows, perhaps Spring Fashion Week will be filled with new trends from the 60’s or 80’s. Only time will tell.
