The legend, ultimate icon, and our princess, Carrie Fisher, passed away four years ago today. Her death was a devastating loss that shocked the world as she was only 60 years old at the time of her passing. As dreadful as this news was, it brings us great ease to know that Fisher’s true spirit will live on forever through her descendants, her impeccable taste in fashion, and, of course, her portrayal as Princess Leia.
Carrie Fisher always underestimated herself. Whether it was her stunning beauty, her slim figure, or the seemingly effortless way she sang, she never saw herself the way the world saw her. There’s one quality in particular that she has downplayed time and time again: her sense of fashion. In her memoir, “The Princess Diarist,” Fisher claimed that she had little to no sense of fashion.
Now, Fisher is one of my idols so it hurts me to say this–but I think that claim is wrong. Just because she didn’t wear crazy unique outfits (aside from the fashion in “Star Wars” of course), doesn’t mean that she had no sense of fashion. Her style was simple and elegant, and her comedic and flamboyant personality shined through.
Fisher wore hundreds of iconic outfits that should be talked about and admired. But, today, I’ll only mention five of her top fashion moments.

This outfit is a mixture of 80s and 90s vibes. The bright blue dress is reminiscent of 80s neon fashion, while the wrap looks similar to something that Kelly Kapowski would wear in the 90s sitcom “Saved by the Bell.” Paired with a neutral purse and a blue jewel necklace that matches the dress, this outfit is a classic.

Next up is a ballerina-inspired look. In typical Carrie Fisher fashion, she wore a statement piece and kept the rest of the outfit fairly simple. This particular outfit was meant to draw attention to the skirt as every other piece is black. The ballerina look is brought together with a loose and messy bun and, of course, Fisher’s beautiful smile.

Rosy pink is Fisher’s color. She looks absolutely stunning in this simple but girly outfit. The first time I saw her in this fit, the French song “La Vie En Rose” came to mind. The rosy-pink color is the focus, and it’s paired with a sleek gold necklace. Fisher kept the hair and makeup simple to not draw attention away from the outfit.

Fisher is known for her blazers and pantsuits. This one stands out from all the other menswear looks she adorned because of the intricate colors. The seemingly simple blazer and pants are spiced up with a detailed and bright-colored shirt as well as a belt that pairs perfectly with the pants.

Fisher’s top fashion moment was when her outfit itself was a statement. In the late 1970s, at a time when women dressed fairly conservative, Fisher wore a sheer black dress with no bra. Fisher was seen wearing this at a London event with Paul Simon, who was her boyfriend at the time. While paparazzi took photos of her controversial outfit, Fisher held her head high and walked confidently through the crowd.
Carrie Fisher inspired young girls all over the world. She was never afraid to be herself, and she didn’t conform to what the public wanted her to be. So, if in Fisher’s eyes these outfits showed her “little to no sense of fashion,” then I would gladly have little to no sense of fashion rather than wearing what society views as “fashionable.”
