DIY beauty hacks every girl should know

By Gabrielle Hester Photos by Gabrielle Hester

Do you ever find yourself binge watching beauty guru videos on YouTube for hours? If so, I feel you. I sit there watching these videos in awe, wishing I could get my skin to look as illuminating as theirs. I listen to them rant about products that cost upward of $50 apiece and wonder how I can find things that are affordable, but quality products.

If you find yourself in this situation too, you’ll want to read this carefully. I discovered three DIY beauty hacks that will perform just as well as those $50 products and cost three times less.

Brush Cleaning Board

I’m sure you’ve seen beauty gurus rave about how important it is to keep your makeup brushes clean. Most use boards with elaborate designs to rid their brushes of bacteria and leftover makeup. I constantly forget to wash my brushes, so I’m definitely not spending $20 or more on a board; however, I found a more economical solution – I made my own.

All you need is a folder and a hot glue gun. I went to my local convenient store and bought a cheap folder. Then, I cut it straight down the middle. I looked at several beauty board designs beauty gurus use for some inspiration and mimicked it onto the folder with the hot glue. Not only did it turn out great, but it also cleans my brushes with ease!

Homemade Toner

Toner is an essential step in your beauty routine. It moisturizes, shrinks the appearance of pores and leaves skin glowing. A quality toner costs at least $25 nowadays. I understand this is an essential product, but I’m not so sure my bank account feels the same.

I researched the best DIY toners and found one that is simple. It’s primarily composed of apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar balances the skin’s natural pH level, exfoliates and lightens acne scars and dark spots.

For this toner, all you need to do is mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons of water. I bought a spray bottle from Target to hold the contents. That’s it…so easy, right? Mist it on your face after you use cleanser, and see a noticeable difference in your skin.

DIY Lip Scrub

The weather is changing, which means it’s effecting your skin. If you’re like me, my lips get so dry when the weather changes. I find myself constantly applying lip balm, only to have my lips chapped again an hour later.

Lip scrubs can get a bit pricey; however, I must admit that I occasionally splurge on Lush’s lavish lip scrubs.

Most of the time, though, I have a budget to stick to. Just like the toner, I created this product with two simple ingredients: olive oil and sugar.

There aren’t any exact measurements for this one. Just add equal parts oil and sugar. You can also swap olive oil for coconut oil to give your lip scrub a sweeter taste. I like to use this lip scrub at night, so when I wake up I have soft, luscious lips.
