Olivia Rodrigo took the world by storm after her first single, “drivers license,” was released and broke the Spotify record for most streams of a song in a single week. Her newest song, “deja vu,” was released with its music video on April 1. The fashion in Rodrigo’s new music video is modern, but it is also an ode to different eras.
Rodrigo begins the video by driving down the Pacific coast in an old yellow convertible while wearing a 1950s-inspired headscarf and sunglasses. This look has recently come back in style after a TikTok trend involving a headscarf and sunglasses.
The Versace headscarf was paired with dark sunglasses and a glossy lip — making Rodrigo look like a young Audrey Hepburn. She wore a plain white T-shirt, cuffed blue jeans, and high-top Converse making the headscarf and sunglasses combo prominent.
In the video, Rodrigo is seen spying on a girl wearing a vivid green dress with ruffles on the skirt. She is mesmerized by the dress and, in the next clip, ends up getting one for herself to wear. The dress is a classic ‘50s A-line style with a puffed-out skirt, and both girls look like princesses wearing it.

The concept of a female stalker came from the TV show “Killing Eve,” which also happens to be Rodrigo’s favorite show, according to a recent MTV News interview.
Layered necklaces and a plethora of rings must be Rodrigo’s signature style because, throughout the video, she’s wearing those same accessories — even when her outfit changes.
Sticking with the ‘50s theme, both Rodrigo and her look-alike are seen wearing two-piece denim set with a Chanel cardigan.
The cardigan is light pink with a black lining and has two patch pockets. This style of cardigan was an important fashion item in the 1950s because it added a layer to the outfit to keep the conservative look, according to an article by Kathryn Hatter.

Straying from the post-war era, Rodrigo resembles a hippie attending Woodstock in another clip.
Again with the matching sets, the “driver’s license” singer is dressed in a porcelain-colored, feathery vest and skirt. Paired with braids and conspicuous earrings, she fits right in with the groovy era.
Music videos have been a staple in pop culture and fashion since the start of MTV. Artists like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry shaped the 2010s with unique and theatrical music videos featuring fashion that was fun and different. However, since the late 2010s, music videos have toned down on the theatrics altogether — aiming for a more realistic video that represents current fashion, Rodrigo’s music video is proof of that.
Even if you aren’t passionate about fashion (p.s. I’m not either), you can recognize that it’s what helps make this music video. The clothing pieces from the ‘50s have been reimagined in a more modern way — like that amazing green dress.
1950’s staples are slowly making a comeback in subtle ways. It started with the headscarf trend on TikTok and next, it will be A-line dresses. Rodrigo’s video is just another example of how this era has timeless pieces and how to make something so old and classic look chic.
