The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards took place Sunday night, and with 31 years of history behind the show, the audience has learned to expect the unexpected. Although the VMAs celebrate music, fashion holds a big role, just like any other award show. What makes it stand apart is MTV is cool and trendy and fun, and who shows up and what they wear prove it. In 1998, Rose McGowan barely wore anything. In 2010, Lady Gaga wore meat and Justin Bieber sported a live snake around his wrist. Last Halloween, this year’s host Miley Cyrus reminded us all of Lil Kim’s proof that pasties work at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1999. It’s 2015. We’ve been down this road before and it’s never the same. We’ve seen things we can’t unsee, we have problematic faves we just can’t let go of. There’s no choice now but to move forward and because the carpet leads to the door, it all starts with fashion.
Low and behold the outfits you need to know from the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards:
The Host

After her performance of We Can’t Stop and her tongue became trending topics in 2013, I don’t think anyone expected anything short of shocking from Miley Cyrus.
Best Squad:
Gigi Hadid, Martha Hunt, Hailee Steinfeld, Cara Delevingne, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Serayah, Mariska Hargitay, Lily Aldridge, and Karlie Kloss – photo from Popsugar
Is this really a surprise?
Best Newbie:

Before you do a Spotify search, know that Steele isn’t a musician. She’s a beauty guru on YouTube (makeupbymandy24). Anyone that underestimates the stars of the internet world is only doing a disservice to themselves. Consider them up-and-coming if you must, but know they’ve arrived. When you factor in her age—16—and her lack of experience with red carpets, she’s killing it.
Did We Miss Some Kind of Memo?

In my opinion, the ladies went with a “less style, more sex appeal” kind of approach, which is nothing new at the VMAs. However, FKA Twigs rocks it. As for the recipient of this year’s Michael Jackson Vanguard Video Award? It looks like West planned to drop his wife off and watch at home.

Just thought you should know.

The only reason I’m bringing these outfits to your attention is to make you aware—if you weren’t already—of these ladies’ attempts at bringing an end to slut-shaming.
I don’t think there was a “Best Dressed” on the carpet this year, for me at least, but I am capable of being persuaded. My favorite outfits always come out during the performances anyway.
