Free the Nipple

Let’s not sugarcoat it. Men have it easier.

This is true in voting, equal pay, and even just being topless. Policing women’s bodies isn’t a new concept. It’s even against Instagram’s policies to post a female nipple (though a few accounts have found a way around it), but we see shirtless photos of men almost every day.

It is only legal in six out of 50 states for women to go topless (with the exception of breastfeeding), but a man walking around shirtless doesn’t affect anyone. This has led women to protest resulting in the “Free the Nipple” movement.

“Free the Nipple” is a cultural and political movement that is a Topfreedom campaign. The movement was inspired by the “Free the Nipple” movie which advocated for women to be topless and pushed to stop the censorship of women’s nipples in America.

This campaign has gained lots of momentum over the years and now even has its own day, March 26. Many states have a “Go Topless” day where women are seen bare on the streets in protest of the double standard against female nipples.

Before the “Free the Nipple” movement was in full swing, Jennifer Aniston was the first female on TV to have her nipples visible through her shirts on the ‘90s sitcom “Friends.”

Her character, Rachel, would often wear tight tops, but choose to go braless. Aniston spoke to Vogue about how she does not believe we should be ashamed of them.

Going braless has created a trend to have nipples visible through clothing and many people are happy to ditch the bras.

With the movement gaining lots of attention many celebrities have hopped on the train. Miley Cyrus has dropped the veil on her nipples with an Instagram post last year.

In her caption, she mentions that Instagram asked her to remove the post. But a year later, the post still stands strong just slightly bending the Instagram nudity rule.

The movement takes things one step further with the latest trend of nipple piercings. Since this piercing is more on the private side of things, we can only speculate about which celebrities have them.

But they have become a statement on the red carpet for celebrities like the Jenner sisters and Rihanna.

Stars have been popularizing the piercing recently and we see more and more women feeling empowered by them. There’s something about having a needle pushed through your nipple that makes women feel stronger and ready to stand up to men.

This isn’t without saying that the pain of nipple piercings isn’t something to be taken lightly. But many women, like Kendell Jenner, say they feel empowered after.

“It’s sexy, it’s comfortable, and I’m cool with my breasts,” she mentioned to Vogue.

Nipple piercings have become a quiet way to be involved in the “Free the Nipple” movement. With the progression of women’s rights and body positivity nipples have become sexy and trendy!
