How to travel like a jetsetter

Rejoice, college ladies. Spring time is finally upon us and that means sweet summertime is only a few weeks away! As college tradition dictates this means we must abandon the increasingly impossible-to-focus-on textbooks and messy morning post-all-nighter buns to jet set to somewhere fabulous and relaxing – hopefully featuring Cosmos and a beach.

Like everything else, it’s also a chance to bring out a whole new side to our style – especially on the way there. Regardless of where your spring destination is, here are a few travel tips and fashion essentials to take along on your trip that will keep you looking refreshed and ready for vacation.

As I’m sure none of us remember because it was before we were born, but going to the airport used to be a stylish occasion. During the days of Pan Am flights and pin curls, women used airports as another way to express style, class and femininity.

Gates and cabins were places to mingle and socialize. Now when you go to the airport it’s an expression of laziness, exhaustion, Uggs and a competition of who can wear the baggiest sweatpants. Stop and brace yourself for what I’m about to say: comfort can look chic too.

The Essentials – The Watch

Time is everything when you have to be somewhere. Every girl looks better when she is aware of time and the fact that she has somewhere to be – because let’s face it, we’re very important. Keep track of your flights and look put together at the same time to keep your travel style timeless.

 – The Blazer

You can sport a comfortable well-tailored blazer (navy, black and white are my personal favorites) over a simple white or striped tank or tee to look European chic and effortlessly sophisticated – always a good look.

 – The Scarves

On or off the plane, scarves are an easy way to keep your luggage light and can be worn so many ways – they literally double outfit possibilities and are the first thing you should pack when traveling.

 – The Sunglasses

You will definitely need these, no matter what type of destination you travel to.

 – The Big Bag

The roomier the better – for trips lasting less than a week or even longer, I suggest an over sized bag to use as your main bag to minimize additional luggage. Traveling light and keeping your look looking relaxed, effortless and not overdone is essential on vacation. Leave as much baggage as you can – in every sense – at home.

 – The Jeans

I’ve always heard fashion tips not to wear jeans on a plane but I’m sorry, I think there is almost nothing better. No, nothing sparkly, ripped or splattered with artificial paint – just your simple and best pair of jeans.

 – The Shoes

Don’t travel in platform heels but comfortable heels definitely work. Not comfy enough for you? Feminine black flats or a pair of increasingly trendy loafers are also good options.

 – Oh, and those Gadgets

Leave the laptop at home – stick with your iPhone, iPad or other smart devices. Download your books. Minimize your iTunes library to a travel playlist. The less the better – a few tunes off my Spring Break playlist:

– – –   Fun. – We Are Young

– – –   The Shins – Simple Song

– – –   Adele – Set Fire to the Rain
