Is It Worth The Hype: Disney Plus

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

College and adulting in general brings overwhelming amounts of work and stress, often leaving us with the desire to be kids again.

Disney has defined many generations, especially those at this pivotal stressful point of life.

With its introduction on November 12, Disney Plus has provided perfect antidote for these stressful times. This streaming service provides the opportunity to remember what it feels like to be a kid.

For just $6.99 a month, you get a library of Disney classics at your fingertips. Or, you can opt for the 12.99 a month option where users can access ESPN, Hulu, AND Disney Plus.

Additionally, Verizon Wireless has offered its unlimited wireless customers a free one-year subscription.

Each account can create up to seven different user-profiles and stream on up to four devices at a time.

Personally, I think that the prices are reasonable given that Disney Plus contains nearly 500 movies and 7000 episodes of TV shows.

However, it could be a bit unreasonable for fans who were already reliant on their Netflix subscriptions for their Disney fix-in.

With Netflix removing a majority of their Disney catalogue, Netflix subscribers could easily feel trapped and forced into spending more money than they initially budgeted for entertainment.

Still, Disney Plus offers far more Disney movies and TV shows than Netflix ever did.

They have Jonas, Wizards of Waverly Place, all three High School Musicals, The Lizzie McGuire TV show and movie, Boy Meets World, Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and Suite Life on Deck, and every Star Wars movie just to name a select few.

In addition to classics you’ve seen countless of times, Disney Plus also provides original/never-before-seen programming. High School Musical the Musical the Series has gotten a lot of positive praise as has the Mandalorian, a Star Wars original.

Disney Plus is organized really well. You can choose to look at National Geographic, Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel, or just Disney.

The homepage shows you what’s trending and what’s recommended for you.

You can also separate your searches between originals, movies, and series within each of those sections to further filter your search by genre.

Similar to Netflix or other streaming services, you can add items you wish to watch in the future to a watchlist. However, unlike Netflix, there is no “resume watching” feature that allows you to easily resume whatever series or movie you left off on.

So, if you want to continue your Phineas and Ferb binge, you’re going to have to manually search the series and remember where you left off.

Additionally, while Disney Plus is cheaper than Netflix, it also has much less content than Netflix. This is obvious given that the programming is limited to that created by Disney. Still, it can be frustrating to consistently toggle between sites if one commits to both sites.

If users are to choose only Disney Plus, then they will inevitably miss out on a lot of varied content and Netflix original favorites like Stranger Things.

Another frustrating feature of Disney Plus is that some content is not actually available for users to watch. Instead, you can only watch a trailer and see that the content won’t be available until 2020 or even 2021.

Despite its flaws, Disney Plus is full of benefits and the world has taken notice. It already has over 10 million users and hopes to grow to 90 million subscribers by 2024.

My overall conclusion is that it’s worth the hype.

Next time I need to satisfy my Cole Sprouse craving, jam out to High School Musical, or escape from reality for a bit, I know Disney Plus will be there for me.
