The chief executive of Salvatore Ferragamo, Marco Gobbetti, appointed Maximilian Davis as the Italian luxury brand’s newest creative director.

The 26-year-old Trinidadian-Jamaican designer is the first person of color to be appointed as the creative director of Ferragamo. The previous creative director, Paul Andrew, stepped down in 2021.

In a press release from Ferragamo, Gobbetti expressed his excitement for Davis joining the team, saying that his powerful aesthetic makes him one of the “most brilliant talents of his generation.”

“His work is defined by elegance, refined sensuality, and constant commitment to quality,” Gobbetti said. “Through his lens of contemporary sensibility, he will write a new, exciting chapter for this house built on a heritage of creativity, craftsmanship, sophistication, and outstanding human values.”

In the same press release, Davis also expressed how grateful he was to be joining the brand and that he was ready to “build on the heritage” of the Italian fashion house.

“Ferragamo represents a dedication to timeless elegance and sophistication that I find incredibly inspiring,” Davis said. “I’m looking forward to articulating my vision, elevated by the codes of Italian craftsmanship, quality and innovation.”

Davis was born in Manchester and is now based in London, where he created his own brand in 2020 and gained attention from all over the world. He only showcased his collection at London Fashion Week on two different occasions before joining the Ferragamo team stated by Essence Magazine.

Celebrities including Dua Lipa, Kim Kardashian, Adwoa Aboah, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are just a few examples of stars who love to wear Davis’ designs.

Lipa has worn Davis’ designs at a number of occasions including the 2021 Fashion Awards, her newest music video with Megan Thee Stallion “Sweetest Pie,” and even her birthday celebration.

According to W Magazine, Davis said that his brand focuses on the “exploration of and tribute to his Trinidadian-Jamaican roots.” It also stated that his inspiration comes from things such as his grandmother’s vinyls and calypso music. His first collection was a tribute to Carnival in Trinidad. Davis also said that another inspiration of his is Grace Wales Bonner, a British fashion designer, after working as her junior designer.

Davis additionally told W Magazine that his family has been very proud of him ever since he started his eponymous brand, recalling memories of times where he would be sewing in his bedroom into the early morning just to make clothes for himself and his friends.

According to Essence Magazine, Davis plans to put a hold on his self-named brand, Maximilian, to solely focus on his newest role at the Italian brand instead.
