The Chic Daily was given a very warm welcome by Fashion Designer Mia Torres with Melissa Torres Designs in her own home. The ambiance was set.
Jazz was music playing and some amazing snacks were waiting at our arrival. We were first greeted at the door by GG, Torres’s adorable furry friend, and then taken to her private studio.
The studio was amazing and the creative vibe was definitely present. Inspiration filled the walls with quotes and positive reinforcement that dreams can come true with hard work and dedication.
I absolutely loved the positive creative environment she had set up, it was truly inspiring.
During our sit down, Torres shared how she first fell in love with fashion and that her start in retail began locally. She explained her love for what she does can be traced back to her first job, working long days at Desert Sky Mall.
“Just being exposed to the new clothing that was coming in and seeing the styles and the colors it just kinda opened my eyes to fashion and ever since then I just always enjoyed it,” Torres said.
While showing us around, Torres offered a sneak peek at a project she is currently working on for the upcoming Phoenix Fashion Week event, Spring into Style, on May 16.
She best describes her designs as, “A custom luxury couture brand.” Torres says that what she usually does “is custom designs for people who are either walking the red carpet or going to galas or any kind of event.”
The main thing I loved the most about learning all about Torres’ work was that she makes one of a kind designs for her clients that range from all sizes.
She explained, “I don’t just do a 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, I do all sizes for whoever wants one, I’ll make it for them.”
I had the opportunity to talk to her about the connection to Colleen Jennings who is the Executive Director of ASU Gammage and the only voter from Arizona for the Tony Awards.
Jennings chose Melissa Torres Designs to create a special custom design for her. The top-secret fashion design will rock the red carpet in New York at the Radio City Music Hall’s 74th edition of the Tony Awards in June.
Her hard work and perseverance have definitely paid off.
Some of Torres’ accomplishments include winning the Phoenix Fashion Week’s Emerging Digital Designer Bootcamp, one of her couture designs was featured in Gladys Magazine for the first time, as well as having her designs on the catwalk at the Miss Arizona USA 2020 Pageant in January.
Torres’ brand is definitely celebrating huge success in the fashion industry and she is also using her platform to help those who are in need.
She recently partnered up with the Cancer Support Community Arizona, a nonprofit organization, to help teens who have been impacted by Cancer. She helped to collect a variety of prom dresses for them and encouraged her community to donate as well.
She also teamed up with her mother, who is an educator, to give back to underprivileged high school students who are excelling in their studies.
One lucky student with exceptional grades was awarded the Melissa Torres Outstanding Student Award. Torres will be utilizing her fashion design talents to create a custom design for the student to wear at their graduation.
“I just want to help people because I think I would’ve needed that or it would’ve been helpful to have that back in the day for me,” Torres said. “Now that I’m able to do that for others I definitely want to be that person.”
The Melissa Torres Designs Brand is dedicated to empowering the younger generations, helping the community, inspiring us all to keep pushing for our dreams and to keep working hard every day to be successful.
