MTV’s Video Music Award Show took place in New York on Sept. 11, where celebrities strutted the red carpet in their designer looks. Here are some of the outfit highlights from the night.
Sabrina Carpenter, who won Song of the Year, stunned the red carpet in a vintage ‘90s Bob Mackie, sparkling silver gown. Originally worn by Madonna to the 1991 Oscars, the strapless piece glimmered with white sequins, beads, pearls, and crystals. Carpenter went for an overall very elegant old Hollywood glamor look, partially referencing Marilyn Monroe.
Taylor Swift was a vision in yellow plaid, which many fans online said was reminiscent of the outfit Cher wore in the hit ‘90s movie Clueless. Swift’s look from Dior included a yellow plaid taffeta bustier top with an open floor-length skirt that showed off her black velvet shorts. She completed the look with long black strappy leather gloves and thigh-high black boots. Swift gave an edgy twist to her look with a smoky eye and black accessories. Does this mean she’s “...Ready For It?” Will Reputation be announced soon?
Chappell Roan, Best New Artist winner, was styled in Y/Project for her red carpet look. Her outfit was a long sheer black and white tulle gown paired with an extravagant mint green cape with bubble sleeves. She accessorized with an oversized cross necklace and a sword, foreshadowing the medieval style she would later perform in.
During Roan’s performance of “Good Luck, Babe,” she took the medieval look to a new level wearing an entire suit of leather armor by Zana Bayne while being surrounded by knights and a castle in flames.
Roan had yet another outfit change when she went to receive her award, stealing the stage in a Rabanne Spring 2024 silver chainmail outfit.
Tyla debuted in a neon yellow outfit from Area, featuring a “spaghetti fringe” corset and mini skirt. As the name suggests, the look was very “stringy,” showing gaps with her neon green undergarments peeking through. She styled the outfit with a thick blue necklace and big chunky rings.
Lisa, the BLACKPINK singer and Best K-pop Award winner, wore a custom embroidered Mugler corset gown from their Spring Summer 2025 collection. The cream-colored gown included full-length gloves and a hood as one piece, and the corset shined with metallic detailing at the top.
Halsey walked the carpet in a custom 1996 Versace dress. The dress, originally designed for Elizabeth Hurley, has not been worn since its debut. The vibrant red dress featured black leopard print and sparkling embellishments on the upper and lower body areas.
Tate McRae wore Cavalli and recreated Britney Spears’ sheer black lace outfit from the 2001 VMAS. The look consisted of black undergarments and a high neck long-sleeved lace mini dress.
With a strong start to the show, Megan Thee Stallion was the host for the night. Throughout the night, she had multiple outfit changes. One of her most iconic looks from the show was her recreation of Britney Spears’s “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance outfit. She recreated the entire outfit, complete with the green bra, sparkly micro shorts, jeweled butterfly stickers and the finishing touch of a live giant yellow snake wrapped around her shoulders. While Britney Spears did an entire performance number with the snake at the 2001 VMAS, Megan Thee Stallion quickly separated from it.
While these were only a few outfits from the night, there were so many more outfit changes and unique designs. Many celebrities went all out and even wore looks that were reminiscent of previous VMAS performances, including several Britney Spears references. There was no shortage of vintage looks on the runway as well. Each celebrity truly stood out in their designer outfits and brought each performance to life with their coordinated looks.
