Spooky season calls for spooky makeup. Whether you want to have an absolutely terrifying costume or look drop-dead gorgeous, your makeup will play a role in your look. Here are three makeup looks to take your Halloween costumes to the next level.
EUPHORIA
Right now, the TV show Euphoria is all the rage. The HBO show stars Zendaya who just recently won an Emmy for her role as Rue. The show has become popular due to the exotic makeup looks and the detailed storylines of each character.
They are set to release a new season soon. I used this as my inspiration for the first look because in the show the makeup looks are editorial and unlike any other show. Before the show was released, at least to me, I felt like I could not wear this kind of makeup outside of the house. But now, it feels a lot more normalized. The makeup looks worn in the show are super over-exaggerated with an immense amount of glitter.
Some of the characters have gems all over their eyes and they use a trippy style of makeup to portray what someone sees when they are tripping on drugs. Euphoria makeup requires lots of glitter, which is right up my alley.

How to: This look is about being as creative as you can. I made this lookup as I was doing it. I used colors that I wouldn’t normally use. My inspiration came from one of the first scenes in Euphoria where Rue had glitter tears coming down her face. I also used gems to highlight my model’s eyes.
CUTS AND BRUISES
Let’s say you want to go for a more gory look, special effects (SFX) makeup is for you. Time to take a trip to Spirit Halloween. This can be anything from using prosthetics to just using some purple eyeshadow and making a bruise. This look is customizable so you can make it look like a vampire bit you or a full-blown zombie.
But the process is all the same and I promise it’s a lot easier than it looks! This look is your traditional scary look and will help tie your whole costume together.

How to: SFX makeup might seem daunting at first glance, but I am here to break it down for you. The cuts and bruises can be as big or small as you want them to be.
Let’s start easy with bruises. Bruises are made of brown, purple, red, and blue pigments, but you can make it look realistic without complicating it.
Step 1: Start with a small red circle of face paint where you want your bruise and smudge it out with your fingers.
Step 2: Add purple or dark red shades in the center and blend out to the red.
Pro tip: Keep it looking blotchy because bruises aren’t perfect!
Step 3: Now time for the cut look. Start by putting the liquid latex in the shape you want your cut to be. I usually do a bruise on my skin underneath a cut to make it look more realistic.
Step 4: Rip apart a cotton ball and place it on the wet liquid latex
Step 5: Then cover the cotton with another layer of latex.
Step 6: After the latex dries, Start pulling what will be the inside of your cut upwards.
Pro tip: Use a bobby pin to rip it apart and don’t be afraid to cut pieces with scissors to make it look realistic
Step 7: Color your latex. If you are not using skin-colored latex then use a foundation or concealer and go over all the latex. Next, take red face paint and use it to make the skin look inflamed using the same blending technique as we did for the bruising.
Step 8: Now work on the inside of the cut. I use black face paint and line the inner cut and then use red in the center of the cut.
Step 9: FAKE BLOOD! This will make your cut look super realistic, but be careful to not overdo it. A little goes a long way with fake blood.
STUNNING SKELETON
If you need a costume, but don’t want to dress up, this look is for you. It can be as pretty or as gory as you want it to be. This look is my personal favorite because it is much more detailed and takes time. You can make it really girly by adding glitter or using color.
I also love that (if you do only part of your face) you can still do eye makeup. I think it’s a good balance between spooky and sexy.

How to: The easiest way to achieve this is to look for a picture you like for inspiration and try to follow it. I like to use Pinterest. Here are a few tips to make it easier!
Tip 1: Use your finger instead of a brush to blend white and black face paint together. It makes it more of a smudgy look.
Tip 2: Use small brushes to add fine details. This will make the look more realistic.
Tip 3: Make sure you have a strong white base that is fully dry before you add more paint on top.
Halloween is the best time to be as extra as you possibly can and this is just one way, but each of these looks is so versatile that you can make them your own. Hopefully, it’ll help you step out of your comfort zone and catch everyone’s attention because you will have the best costume in the room.
