During the most recent Vogue Forces of Fashion conference, Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour hinted at what can be expected for next year’s Met Gala. “All I can say is the dress code will be timeless,” Wintour said. While vague, this statement appears to be spot-on as the official theme has finally been revealed: “About Time: Fashion and Duration.”
Along with an exhibition in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Met Gala will focus on the concept of time, showcasing a timeline of 160 archive women’s garments that span 150 years presented through a lens of evolution.
With that being said, the exhibition will showcase fashion from the past, present, and future. The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition will be presented to the public starting May 7 through September 7, 2020. Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator, describes the theme as a “reimagining of fashion history that’s fragmented, discontinuous, and heterogeneous.”
Next year’s theme is inspired by the novels of Virginia Woolf and theories of early 20th-century French philosopher Henri Bergson. Bolton told Vogue he found inspiration in the 1992 Sally Potter film “Orlando.”

Following previous themes “Heavenly Bodies” and “Camp,” we can only hope that this year’s Met Gala will be bigger and better. While the official guest list has not yet been revealed, I expect guests to have a lot of fun with next year’s theme. Celebrities have interpreted past themes in a variety of ways, so expect next year’s abstract theme to be no different. We know from past years that it’s up to guests to put their own interpretation on the theme, so it’s bound to be a very interesting turnout, with lots of different takes on the philosophical motif.
As always, the Met Gala will take place on the first Monday of May, and will be chaired by Nicolas Ghesquiére of Louis Vuitton, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and of course the icon herself Anna Wintour.

With so many big names on board, next year’s Met Gala, “About Time: Fashion and Duration,” has the potential to be one of the best yet.
