On early weekday mornings, bustling students fill the streets of ASU campuses like hipsters to a sale at Urban Outfitters. One particular morning, as I was walking through the vibrant environment of downtown Phoenix, I noticed the strong sense of diversity in the way each student expressed themselves. Every person has their own background, and in order to express this, many turn to the way they present themselves. When a person wakes up in the morning, whether they select specific colors and patterns to add to their outfit or they take on the more effortless manner of picking something up off the floor and think, well this one is clean, it says something about that individual.
College, especially freshman year, is a time when students must decide what they want to do with the rest of there lives. This creates a focus within every student to question who they are and how they want to put themselves out into the world. I’ve decided to capture this form of self exploration in keeping monthly tabs on certain college freshmen and their senses of style. This month we will meet Molly Bowes, a journalism student at ASU’s downtown campus, from Chicago, Illinois.

How do you decide what to wear in the morning?
Bowes: “I decide what to wear in the morning based on what I feel and how I want to think of myself that day. I don’t really care how others see me dressed because at the end of the day it’s up to me.”
Who is your style inspiration?
Bowes: “I like to incorporate a lot of Chicago street wear brands into what I wear because I really support what is happening in Chicago right now with the music industry.”
How would you describe your style in one word?
Bowes: “Wicker Park on crack.”
Being from Chicago, what is your perception of Phoenix fashion?
Bowes: “It’s like a lego city. Everything is so modern, but the subculture hasn’t been developed yet.”
