V for Vintage: Let’s Get Mod With It

By Camden Cook

Who said that time travel is impossible? Trends may wane in popularity, but the vintage vibe is one that never seems to become outdated. Vintage accessories are a fun and unique way to make a statement. The best part? There are so many decades to choose from!

One of the most notable periods in fashion history is the 1960s, a revolutionary decade that marked a breakaway from social conformity. Many people associate the 60s with influential style icons like Jackie Kennedy and Twiggy. While they differed in many respects, both ladies made a lasting mark in the sphere of fashion. Jackie, associated with class and femininity, was often spotted sporting signature pearls and tailored dresses. Ladies looked up to Ms. Kennedy as a role model, praising not only her countenance but also her sophisticated style.

On the other hand, Twiggy encouraged women to embrace their sexuality and deviate from established norms. She is in large part held responsible for ushering in the age of the mini skirt. Garments progressively became shorter as women associated length with confidence.

I am just one among many who are passionate about vintage fashion. Scores of people, celebrities included, have joined in on this style revival. Icons like Scarlett Johansson, Zooey Deschanel and Sienna Miller are known to channel inspiration from past trends.

During a stroll through my Phoenix neighborhood, I happened to stumble upon a chic vintage boutique called Antique Sugar. Brimming with excitement, I wandered into the storefront and began exploring. The boutique exceeded my expectations, as it offered quality merchandise dating back to the early twentieth century. After sifting through the racks, I headed to the register with two purchases in hand. (And they were both on sale!) I highly recommend stopping by Antique Sugar or one of the seven other major vintage retailers in the Valley. Trust me when I say you won’t be disappointed!
