What all the festival rage is about: Upcoming Phoenix events you can’t miss

By Kaylin King

It’s that time again, friends – festival season. If you’re one of the many riding the electronic dance music (EDM) wave, or if the hype of all your favorite artists in the same spot has you feelin’ some type of way, you’ve probably been experiencing some burning FOMO while watching a set through a screen because your college-budget doesn’t accommodate for major festivals.

Instead of painfully clicking through everyone’s snap stories, take a closer look at what’s happening right here at home. Phoenix has been attracting big names lately and can evidently put on quite the desert party. With so many events happening, it can be difficult to keep up with this season’s local fests. Luckily, I have your back with a list of upcoming events taking place in our very own backyard.

April is set to pack a punch with elite shows: Dillon Francis; Space Yacht Phoenix; Fur Coat; Duke Dumont; Green Lantern; Gina Turner; Brody Jenner; the third annual Phoenix Lights Festival; Scooter & Lavelle + DJ Skribble; DJ Craze; Drezo; Nicky Romero; Havana Brown; Party Thieves, Yultron & Ricky Remedy; Pirupa; MK; House Fest; The Crystal Method; Todd Terry; Jayceeoh; Wet Electric 2017; Country Splash.

The one most deserving of our focus is taking place just next weekend, and that is the Phoenix Lights Festival. Presented by Relentless Beats, this two-day music festival in Downtown Phoenix on April 8 – 9, 2017 will make your jaw drop. The best part about this is that it’s literally a mile from our d-town ASU campus. This multi-stage jam fest will be at the Margaret T. Hance Park, which is located on the “deck” of Interstate Highway 10 Papago Freeway Tunnel between Fifth Avenue and Third Street. That’s walking distance, fam.

The extensively lit lineup will leave you shook with artists including: Above & Beyond; Alesso; Tiesto; STS9; Vince Staples; ZHU; Illenium; Keys N Krates; Oliver Heldens; Pete Tong; Thomas Jack; Coyu; Ekali; Ganja White Night; Grum; Hucci; Josh Wink; the Knocks; Pig&Dan; Robotti vs. Sirus Hood; Shaun Frank; Tokimonsta and Unlike Pluto.

Newly announced artists for the 2017 festival are: 21 Savage; Griz; Zeds Dead; Bro Safari; Cashmere Cat; Justin Martin; Lane 8; Tchami; Tiga; Asadi; Billy Kenny; Codeko; Crizzly; Dr Fresch b2b Bijou; Felix Da Housecat; Go Freek; Helena Legend; Jax Jones; K?D; Loudpvck; Low Steppa; Manilla Killa; Said the Sky; Viceroy; Vindata and Wingtip.

If you survive long enough to experience day two, there’s set to be a special stage hosted by Universatile Music, Phoenix’s premiere hip-hop brand. It will include performances by Tokimonsta, Cashmere Cat, Vince Staples, 21 Savage, Griz and more.
