Live like an Angel

By Mikayla Morehead

It’s that time of year again for bright lights and music galore. That’s right — the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show! Once a year the Victoria’s Secret Angels strut down the runway looking fabulous, and I know I cannot be the only one who wonders how they can look so flawless on the runway. I did some searching to see how they get their bodies into such great shape before the runway show. I discovered that they have an intense workout and diet plan that happens weeks in advance. My roommate and I took on the challenge to attempt to train like Angels for a week — keyword there is “attempt.”

Day One:

The day started as any other. My roommate and I went down for breakfast but this time we were more cautious as to what we were going to eat. We had to stay away from processed foods, sugars, and drink tons of water. We each got an egg white omelet with spinach, onions, and tomatoes. Victoria Secret models work out about four days a week so we decided to start off easy and skip the gym on day one. In between meals was the hardest because I am used to snacking on junk food. Instead I ate a Clif bar in between meals. My roommate and I consistently had water bottles with us to achieve our goal of drinking 60 oz, which we did. It was not too bad of a start.

Day Two:

The day was just like the previous — we went down for breakfast and ordered omelets. We both decided that we should try one of the workouts after our classes were over. When we met up for lunch and walked into the dining hall, the first thing we saw were M&M brownies and homemade Rice Krispy treats. This was tempting, but we walked right past them and straight to the salad bar. I ordered grilled chicken to put in my salad. It was surprisingly enjoyable, but not as enjoyable as the brownies would have been. Later that day we went to the gym. We went for a run on the treadmill for our cardio and looked to Pinterest for a Victoria’s Secret work out. We did a basic beginners workout that included squats, arm workouts, and many ab workouts, my favorite of which was when my roommate and I got a medicine ball and tossed it while in a sit-up position. Although our workout was basic, it was effective — the next day I woke up sore.

Day Three:

Instead of an omelet for breakfast like my roommate ordered, I had cinnamon oatmeal. The diet was starting to become harder as the day went on. I was tempted to order a seasonal Frappuccino from Starbucks. So I decided to go to Starbucks and as they asked me for my order, instead of ordering a Frappuccino, I ordered an unsweetened green iced tea. I cannot say I did the same when dinner rolled around. My roommate and I looked at each other and simultaneously agreed we had given up. I ended up ordering a grilled cheese and French fries. I realized there is a reason only some models are eligible to be an Angel.

My roommate and I look at Victoria’s Secret models in a whole new light. They are not only a pretty face but they put in a lot of work to look the way they do. I would say the average person couldn’t commit to a strict diet and workout like they do to prepare for a show. Overall, it was a good experience while it lasted. We learned some good tips from the Angels, but we cannot stick to their diet everyday.
